After the Parkland shooting and a recent threat at his high school in San Diego, Sam Statler, a Freshman at Rancho Bernardo High School, was inspired to write this poem to encourage students to vote.
Let your voice be heard!
Where has it gone?
Where has our safety gone?
Where has the current protocol taken us?
Where is our voice?
We will not stand for this
We will not stand for the murder of the innocent
We will not stand the lack of protection from the people we confide in
We will not stand for our current, terrible laws.
We will rise.
We will rise and our voices will be heard
We will rise and our voices will drown out our oppressors.
We will rise and overcome the worst that is yet to come
Where we are is temporary
Where we are should not harbor fear
Where we are should not instill panic
Where we are to be safe.
So why isn't it?
So why don't our leaders do anything about it?
So why do our voices fall on deaf ears?
So why we must vote for better laws?
We need to vote for better laws because our voices must be heard.
If our voice is never heard we can't rise up and overcome.
If we can't overcome we can't spread hope and joy.
If we can't spread hope and joy then we live in fear and despair,
So let your voice be heard!
