Mariama Lockington

National Program Manager

Mariama Lockington grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but currently resides in Lexington, Kentucky. She began her nonprofit career in 2007 as a Teaching Fellow for Citizen Schools, working with middle school youth on academic and leadership projects in Oakland, CA. She then spent seven years with 826 National and 826NYC— a national network of K-12 literacy centers, and then later served as a grant coordinator for a federal grant program in Michigan called Safe Routes to School.

Mariama was first introduced to Inspire U.S. in 2017 when she was the Program Coordinator for the Kentucky YMCA Youth Association. In this role, she worked in collaboration with Inspire U.S. to register over 4,000 new voters across Kentucky. During her two year tenure with the Y, and influenced by the partnership with Inspire U.S., Mariama developed a deep passion for youth civic engagement programs.

Mariama holds a Masters in Education from Lesley University and a Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. She is a published author of poetry and young adult novels, and in her free time, Mariama enjoys cooking, reading, boxing, and spending time with her sausage dog, Henry.
