Kathryn Ryan

Program Coordinator, Inspire West Virginia

Kathryn grew up in Charleston, WV, where she currently lives and works. She graduated in May, 2015 with a Masters in Public Health from West Virginia University's School of Public Health. She had previously acquired her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from WVU in 2013. During her time in college, Kathryn was involved in an assortment of activities, such as the Student Affiliate of the WV Public Health Association; ‘Heads Up!’ (a student-led Pedestrian Safety Multimedia Campaign); two sister community health initiatives called Try This! WV and Try This! Greater Morgantown; and more.

During a summer internship with the Our Children, Our Future Campaign to End Child Poverty, Kathryn worked to increase civic engagement in West Virginia through the campaign’s policy advocacy and policy formation trainings. She became passionate about the power and importance of civic engagement. Soon after, she founded the first Our Children, Our Future Student Chapter at WVU, which works to engage students in the policy process and in grassroots community efforts.

Throughout her schooling, Kathryn gained a deep passion for wellness efforts by means of civic engagement and policy formation. She feels it is essential that citizens be involved with their government and with policy-making so that the state's issues can truly be addressed in an impactful way. Kathryn’s goal is to expand civic engagement efforts throughout the state and to eventually increase social and economic mobility so that all individuals can have access to living happy, healthy lives. Being a West Virginia native, Kathryn is passionate about improving this great state toward its full potential.

As a program coordinator for Inspire West Virginia, Kathryn connects with local partners, recruits and mentors student leaders, and oversees program development. In her spare time, she enjoys taking long walks, spending time with her family, knitting, and hiking the mountains of West Virginia.
